These Cairo Sohour Spots Won’t Make You Break the Bank

If having sohour in overpriced Ramadan tents has consumed all your salary\allowance, and you’re searching for a sohour spots that are more on the budget, this article is definitely for you.

Prices have skyrocketed in recent months, but I’m quite sure that a small plate of Foul, Gebna bel Tamatem, Falafel, and yogurt cost way much less than 250-400 EGP. Here are some suggestions wallet-friendly sohour meals (I promise that they tastes way better than the cold sohour served in 80% of the tents).

El Shader…

Maadi’s favorite spot, El Shader, serves a very tasty and budget friendly sohour, every night in Ramadan. Though they’re known for their epic feteer and sandwiches, they also proved to be master of in the art of foul and ta3meya. El Shader is also the place for you, if you enjoy a side of Shisha with your sohour.

Gringo’s…

We wrote a full review about Gringos’ amazing Ramadan sohour, where we had mentioned that they have managed to create the perfect fusion between Mexican cuisine and Oriental cuisine. From Mexican Foul to Taco Felafel, to dipping nachos in Gebna bel tamatem, Gringo’s has four different tailored set suhoor menus, and you definitely must try them.

Murphy’s…

One of my personal favorite picks for sohour is Murphy’s. The most expensive thing in Murphy’s sohour menu is 15 EGP! And I don’t even need to mention the tasty Spanish omelet they serve, it’s everything.

Akla…

Sheraton’s hottest dining spot, is also its hottest suhoor spot. Akla went viral on social media, mainly because of their very and literally cheesy pictures. Their oriental plates are also very tasty, and extremely Instagramable.

Bab El Hadid …

Bab el Hadid has crafted a sohour menu that you cannot miss this Ramadan. The eggs with cheese, sausage, and hotdog, is enough to make us want to spend all of our Ramadan nights there. would lure anyone to go try them out tonight.

WE SAID THIS: Why isn’t having Pizza for sohour a thing already?

We Came, We Ate, We Gained Weight at Shakespeare and Co. Egypt, and It Was Worth It

We are currently in Ramadan’s second half which means two things: we have visited a wide range of restaurants and, consequently, we have already gained those few – or maybe more than just a few – kilograms, that we know we will regret once we bring out our swim suits.

That being said, Shakespeare and Co. Egypt deserves a very special thank you, when it comes to giving credits to the locations and Ramadan hot spots that is surely more than just partially responsible for said weight gain. Indeed, we are going to shamelessly and fairly blame Shakespeare and Co. Egypt‘s cozy and friendly ambience, and delicious open buffet for our weight gain, and here is why.

via: Facebook

via: Facebook

Firstly, the array of food available at Shakespeare and Co. Egypt‘s buffet has something in there for every possible craving we could have. From dishes that represent staple Ramadan favorites like creamy mushroom soup, cheesy sambosak, sizzling hot macaroni with bashamel sauce, ma7shy, perfectly grilled kofta, and finally to the international dishes that we all know and love like chicken curry, beef stroganoff, and much much more; there was literally something to satisfy the several mini – foodies that co – exist within all of us.

via: Facebook

via: Facebook

Secondly, the warm atmosphere made us feel right at home, meaning that we felt comfortable enough to eat as much as we would eat at our grandma’s house. Assuredly, the fact that Shakespeare and Co. Egypt were able to strike the perfect balance between the warmth of their very antique and European ambiance, with Ramadan’s familial spirit ensured that we would be comfortable enough to eat our weight in food.

Did we also mention that the staff members at Shakespeare and Co. Egypt made us feel right at home with their gracious manners, and their extreme level of professionalism, whilst dealing with guests?

If all that were not enough to secure that our Ramadan weight gain goals were achieved, Shakespeare and Co. Egypt‘s dessert buffet made sure they were, with Ramadan classics like konafa, basbossa, and sawabe’ zeinab.

via: Facebook

And because Shakespeare and Co. Egypt think of everything, they of course knew we would be in desperate need of some sugary liquids, after a long day of fasting. While Shakespeare and Co. Egypt had the Ramadan basics – karakdeh and sobia – covered like a boss, we were so glad to see the range of refreshing smoothies and fresh juices that we were accustomed to enjoying at Shakespeare and Co. Egypt outside Ramadan, have maintained their presence during the holy month.

via: Facebook

To sum it up, every single gram of  Ramadan weight that we gained, whilst at Shakespeare and Co. Egypt was completely worth it (especially when the iftar costs only 200 L.E. per person, while the sohour costs only 80 L.E. per person).

WE SAID THIS: Thank you, Shakespeare and Co. Egypt for everything, we will definitely be back with our friends, family, and loved ones, for more!

Predictions say it’s going to be one hot Mordor-y summer. And one is always wondering what cool foods to eat. You needn’t keep looking because it’s right there in front of you — yup, we’re talking about yogurt.

Yogurt has always had a reputation as a dietary superhero. The fact that it’s a grab-and-go food that needs no preparation whatsoever has boosted its popularity at a time when many people are too busy or time-challenged to fix a morning meal. It is basically the Beyonce of breakfasts or snacks. To prove just how amazing yogurt is, we’ve decided to compile a list of reasons why you should have it in your fridge. You’re welcome.

Yogurt is very, very good for you

We here at Scoop Empire love Almarai’s yogurts. Mainly because they’re high in calcium, very good for your bones, but most importantly, they’re absolutely delicious.

Something Extreme Just Happened to Kahk, and We’re Kind of in Love

Just when you think Egyptian desserts and pastry shops can’t get any more creative with their products, they surprise you with a new mouthwatering twist that you absolutely have to try!

via: Facebook

We’ve seen cheesecake Konafa, white chocolate zalabya, red velvet atayef – the list is endless. This year, the Kahk game has changed with the most recent flavors; red velvet and Nutella.

via: Facebook

Renowned stores, Dukes, Nutopia, Tortina and Bisco Misr have announced the new Kahk edition earlier this week which can be found in their nation-wide branches and we can’t wait to try all of them! We here at Scoop Empire think they’re a bit extreme, but we certainly do love them.

via: Facebook

As if our bellies haven’t had enough deliciousness throughout the holy month of Ramadan. But more importantly, as if Kahk needs additional calories! Nutopia decided to add Nutella to our traditional Kahk and there’s no way to avoid it – how can you possibly say no to that!!

via: Facebook

Tortina, Bisco Misr and Dukes as well decided to continue with the red velvet tradition which took the desserts industry by storm last year and launched their line of red velvet Kahk. The colorful mouthwatering item is a must-try!!

WE SAID THIS: Would you rather stick to traditional Kahk or are you up for trying the new twists? tell us what you think.

The Ultimate Guide to Food Trucks and Carts in Cairo

$
0
0

Food trucks and carts are popping up everywhere on the streets of Cairo, and they’re getting more complex and creative with every new one.

There are several perks that make eating from a food truck or cart more appealing; they’re quick and hassle-free, you get to see your food while having it cooked in front of you, and they usually deliver the food inside your car.

What you’re about to witness is a comprehensive guide to the best food on wheels you need to try in Cairo.

Shock’s Burgers

Via Facebook

Shock’s Burgers is hands down on the top of the list, and it totally deserves it. I’ve tried it around a month ago after I read Dina Hashish’s review on it, and I’ve instantly become addicted ever since. Their food is cheesy, tastes amazing, huge portions and is reasonably priced. Also, their cart is very Instagrammable.

Location: New Cairo

My Queen

Via Trustious

My Queen is basically a classic! I remember going there as a child with my older family members, and it wasn’t even new back then. Their menu is so diverse, in a way that would satisfy all taste buds. DO NOT miss their grilled viagra sandwich!

Location: Muhandeseen

Vegabond

Via Facebook

Vegabond Trucks has created a buzz in the food trucks scene! You need to try their chicken Cheetos sandwich.

Location: Heliopolis

VEND

Via Facebook

Vend, Almaza’s most authentic food bike, is an absolute must try. You’d be surprised from their prices as they don’t match their quality and taste — aka, they’re quite cheap.

Location:  Heliopolis

Seecoz

Via Cairo Spots

If you haven’t tried Greek food before, Seecoz is the best place to start. If the picture above doesn’t make you feel things, nothing else will.

Location: New Cairo

Sushi Bike

Via Facebook

Sushi Bike proves that you do not need expensive and luxurious restaurants to eat good sushi! I totally recommend all sushi lovers in Cairo to try out the Sushi Bike experience.

Location: Check their Facebook page to find out.

WE SAID THIS: Why aren’t food trucks a thing in Maadi yet?

The Only Kahk Guide You’ll Need This Eid

$

Eid’s kahk are basically fidget spinners this week because they are the most talked about thing on social media. There are rumors circulating everywhere about insane prices, and how stores are so crowded with so many costumers who look like paparazzi. Along comes an angel named Hagar, who is so selfless, so organized and so appreciative of the beauty of kahk and calories, and gave me the best kahk review I’ve seen in years.

Facebook page, Hagar Says, just posted an exquisite comparison between the market’s most anticipated kahk. She decided to buy 250 grams of kahk from each store — stores likes NOLA, Sale Sucre and Dukes only had full packaged kilos so she had to dismiss them. I want Hagar to be my best friend and organize my life.

According to Hagar, Mandarine Koueider is EGP 95/kilo which is affordable but tastes like ma3mul, more than kahk

Via Hagar Says

Dukes kahk is EGP 110/kilo, the size is inconsistent and not sweety enough. You cannot buy less than an entire kilo

Via Hagar Says

La Poire kahk is EGP 150/kilo and Hagar thinks it’s the Eid’s biggest surprise. It is the only kahk made of baladi ghee which shows in the taste and texture

Via Hagar Says

Sedra’s kahk is EGP 105/kilo with a rough texture

Via Hagar Says

Coppermelt’s kahk is EGP 130/kilo. It is too flat and filled with sesame. You will like it if you are a sesame fan

Via Hagar Says

Choco Chocola is the most expensive type which is EGP 2oo/kilo. The kahk is delicate, melts in your mouth and tastes exquisite. The stuffed kahk is overpriced for EGP 300/kilo

Via Hagar Says

Sale Sucre’s kahk is EGP 120/kilo and you can’t buy less than a kilo. This is the softest kahk Hagar ever tasted, with a subtle flavor, yet nothing about it stands out

Via Hagar Says

El Khabaz kahk is EGP 90/kilo. It is affordable, yet leaves a weird aftertaste which might be due to the type of ghee used

Via Hagar Says

WE SAID THIS: Hagar, can we be friends?

An Open Letter to My Eid’s First Morning Coffee

tumblr_n1giejjVfg1siyzkfo1_500

Dear morning coffee,

It’s been a month since I last smelt your soul creeping into mine, sending shivers down my spine. It’s been 30 days since I laid my eyes on your smoking hot existence. It’s been 720 hours since I ran to your caffeine haven in the early hours of the morning, and it’s been 43,2000 minutes of craving, hurting, agony, daydreaming and occasional tantrums. I’m not even sure of these numbers, my brain isn’t functioning anymore.

Your absence has allowed my inner toddler to surface and hurt people…and things. Just yesterday, I almost smashed my laptop because there was no Wi-Fi, it wasn’t even its fault. The day before, I almost intentionally ran over human beings with my car because they were simply there. Yet, the most excruciating moment of all was our first week apart when someone asked me at work if I’ve seen his phone and I said no, knowing exactly where it was but the toddler wanted people to feel the same pain of separation.

I have just touched you and I now feel safe, embracing you and sniffing you like the coffee creep I was born to be.

WE SAID THIS: Thank you, Eid!

12 Absolutely Delicious Foods You Must Eat in Dahab This Summer

Ahhhh, Dahab! Dahab is a small town on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, approximately 80 km (50 mi) northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh. Formerly a Bedouin fishing village, it is now considered to be one of Sinai’s most treasured diving destinations. But, it’s not just all about diving and being a human Flipper that makes Dahab amazing. Part of what makes the whole Dahab experience magical is the restaurants they have. Not only are most of them, if not all of them, cheap but they’re also very, very delicious.

Hell’s Kitchen – English breakfast

(hellskitchendahab)

(hellskitchendahab)

The most English breakfast you can ever have in Dahab. Pork sausages are available, or as the owner have once told us, “I have real bacon, not the bullshit one.”

Nirvana – Ice cream

(pictaa)

(pictaa)

Nirvana may be popular because of its authentic Indian food, but what you don’t know is its ice cream game is strong AF. You will not stop eating ice cream begad!

Athanor – Any pizza

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

Italian food at its finest! We’re not even being our dramatic basic biznatches self, any pizza from Athanor is truly #nomnomnom.

Hell’s Kitchen – Chicken wings

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

Yup, again. If you haven’t noticed, we love this restaurant! And no, it’s not owned by Gordon Ramsay, more like Gordon Ramses though. One of our favorite places to chill and have a small bite, aka chicken wings and drinks.

Fresh Fish – Any burger

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

You might think you’d want to have seafood from Fresh Fish but how can you when they’re burgers are YUMYUMYUM!!!

King Chicken – Lesan asfour soup, grilled chicken, rice and molokheya

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

Basically though anything you have at this restaurant will be f****** amazing if you’re into Egyptian food. Be careful as the restaurant is usually always busy and it’s very hard to get yourself a table there so you’ll probably get your food to go.

Shark – Seafood platter

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

Our favorite place to have seafood in Dahab. The view is amazing, but the food is perfect. So fresh it will physically hurt! The service is also impeccable.

Lvovich – Russian honey cake

(russianrecipes)

(russianrecipes)

Begad, we’re not even that into cakes but Russian honey cakes are life. They’re also the best with some Bedouin tea!

Anywhere at Blue Hole – Egyptian breakfast

Capture

(kurtgalalah)

How can you say no to an Egyptian breakfast when it has a view that Instagrammable?

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. – Pasta bolognese

(instagram)

(instagram)

We can’t stop pasta, we won’t stop pasta.

Blue House – Green curry

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

Thai is hands down our favorite Asian cuisine. Located in front of Ali Baba hotel, Blue House is where all your Thai dreams will come true. Sadly though, it has been shut for months and many locals say it won’t open again. If that happens, you can go to The Kitchen instead which is your next best thing if you fancy Asian food.

Yum Yum – Fool and ta3meya

(tripadvisor)

(tripadvisor)

This place is very busy in the mornings because a) everyone is probably hungover b) everyone wants hungover food c) fool and ta3meya is the best hangover food.

We Need to Make Use of Our Ruined Sahel Vacations So Here Are Jellyfish Recipes

Sahel has been invaded and it is not by the annual fashionistas and Instagram addicts. This year, only a single managed to enjoy the long Eid vacation and it was the nomad jellyfish. We were stunned when we first laid eyes on the sea creature’s size. Alas, the whole North Coast has been infested by white greasy and stinging creatures that look horrifying.

But the time has come for us to get a grip and start looking at the other half of the cup, even if it’s filled with vinegar to save us from the beast’s sting. Why don’t we feast on the jellyfish and maybe start a new trend in Egypt and have hipster jellyfish carts in New Cairo?

We know you think the texture is too disgusting to chew, but c’mon we eat feseekh and renga. As long as you make sure the type you’re cooking is edible rather than poisonous, here are some jellyfish recipes so this summer doesn’t go to waste.

The Challenge That Took the Term ‘Hunger Games’ to the Next Level

You might hate Crocs, you might hate fedoras, you might even hate the new Wonder Woman movie, but if there’s something we can all agree it would have to be our love for food.

In a country like Egypt, the excessive love of food has always been a thing, especially now with new food bloggers popping out everywhere left and right. We are now living in a time where people are more comfortable than ever, specifically when it comes to expressing themselves artistically with food. This is where Fern comes in.

The butter/ghee experts Fern have always been big believers in the power and importance of good food. This is why it made so much sense for Fern to launch their latest campaign, under the hashtag #الاكل_فنانين (which translates to #Food_Artists).

It started with them posting videos where they showcased well-known food artists. Fern also extensively interacted with their fans, in an effort to know more about unsung foodie heroes. Fern also posted a series of artsy-fartsy pictures to encourage people to bring out the artist in them.

It gets even better. Fern decided to give one lucky foodie the opportunity to win a kitchen makeover from IKEA. Yup, you read that right! A. Freakin’. Kitchen. Makeover. From. IKEA. All the competitors had to do was go take part of Fern’s not-so-hard challenges.

From answering a riddle about molokheya, to testing their photography skills by snapping a picture of a Fern on people’s dining tables, and finally to cooking spinach as well as burgers in an unconventional way, Fern created a fun and easy – breezy challenge for all those foodies who joined.

The renowned Chef Yousri chose three finalists, from an original number of 90 applicants, and got them to go head to head with one another in a live cooking competition (that made us very hungry because how can your stomach not fangirl upon seeing crème de volaille soup and chicken curry) that was broadcasted on Facebook Live. It’s safe to say that we were oh-so-jealous, when we saw the winner who nabbed that kitchen makeover from IKEA.

WE SAID THIS: Thank you Fern for encouraging people to never hide their love for food.

Salafi Preacher Says Eating Jellyfish Is Halal and We’re Kind of Saying ‘Duh’

Long gone the days of swimming in crystal clear water in Egypt’s North Coast. This year, vacationers have been stunned by the humongous jellyfishes invading every single beach in Sahel.

Via tumblr

So now that we know that we can’t swim near the stingy creatures, Egyptians decided to turn it into a culinary delicacy. According to Youm7, Salafi preacher, Sameh Hamouda, stated that there is nothing haram about eating jellyfish as all kinds of seafood are permissible. Well, thanks Sherlock.

WE SAID THIS: We’re afraid this is just another reason people will start making disgusting rubbery dishes.

As a cheese aficionado, my Facebook timeline and Instagram feed are naturally filled with #cheeseporn. My friends always tag me in the newest viral cheese videos that will make most of you scream “CHEESUS CHRIST!”

From a restaurant in New York that melts cheese over everything, to Buzzfeed videos cooking extraordinary mac and cheese; I’ve seen it all, and it’s never too much for me.

Via Facebook

What saddens me is the fact that most of these viral cheese items that I see online are out of my reach. However, as I was scrolling my timeline, I stumbled upon this sexy video below…and it’s everything!

The video of this huge burger and fries getting flooded by melting cheese have literally melted all my feelings! What made my heart sing is that the restaurant was actually in Nasr City, Egypt.

Via Facebook

The sandwich is called Melting Volcano Burger, but when I stalked the bejesus out of their page, I found out that it isn’t the only sandwich on my bucket list! Look at that crispy chicken sandwich below! The badass restaurant is called Daddy’s Burger and it’s near Citystars.

Egyptian Restaurant Challenges You to Eat 60 Sandwiches for Free

Via Kebda and Shawerma

Foodaholics, rejoice for today is Christmas gracing us in the summer. For those who appreciate a delicious, greasy and heavenly sandwich, you are in for a treat and we are heavily hyperventilating from excitement. Egyptian restaurant, Kebda w Shawerma (Liver and Shawerma), has challenged all of us to unleash our inner beasts and we’re so ready for this fiesta.

All you have to do is eat 30 sogo2 and 30 kebda sandwiches all by yourself and you will be named as the akeeel (ultimate eater) of kebda and shawerma and your photo will bless the walls of their restaurant. That’s not even the best part, you can eat whatever you want for free from 5-6 PM daily for the rest of your freaking life.

Via Facebook

Guys, whoever is interested, we need to take this challenge seriously. Do not starve yourself to death before going as you will definitely feel full after 4-5 sandwiches. We need to eat non-stop and stretch our muscles so there is enough space for the best gift social media will ever give us. Just be ready with your Antinal because this is going to be tough.

Do you have what it takes to rule the sogo2/kebda reign?

WE SAID THIS:  For more info, check out Kebda w Shawerma Facebook page here
