Nescafé Gold’s Price Increased and Egypt Is Freaking Out

$

Addiction is an ugly thing, especially when it’s a cup of coffee because there is no loved one to get you help. Everyone you know is silently suffering next to you, your mom is in her own caffeine bubble, your best friend doesn’t answer your calls until she’s had her morning fix and you’re basically doomed for life.

Someone just noticed a 200 gram jar of Nescafé Gold in a Seoudi market with an EGP 99 price tag, posted it on Facebook and yes, we know that all types and sizes of Nescafé jars only increased around EGP 5, maybe a little more for the 200 gram jar, however this is a chance for all of us to freak the hell out and cry Facebook a river of decaffeinated tears.

7 Healthy Yogurt Recipes That Will Leave You Drooling

$

When it comes to one of the key ingredients of our lives, it becomes really hard to describe how amazing this calcium based creamy mixture is. Mix it with some fresh food, honey or whole grains and you have a very healthy breakfast ready.

Yet, this dairy king has more to offer than what we Egyptians give it credit for. It can be used instead of butter and oils in sugary puffs, cakes or pastries and it can also make great dips for everything we eat instead of cheesy calorie-packed sauces we tend to worship. So, next time when you’re going grocery shopping make sure to get the family sized yogurt pack cause we assure you, the next 7 healthy recipes will make you drool.

Cinnamon-Honey morning treat

superhealthykids

superhealthykids

2 tbs of white drizzling honey

1 tbs of ground cinnamon

5 grinded almonds

2 cups of plain fat-free yogurt

The best thing about yogurt is that it is really simple to make, you’ll start off by heating the honey for almost 20 seconds in a microwave, add the rest of the ingredients and voila, it’s done. You can also mix it up with some bananas, oats or strawberries or any fruit actually. It really is up to you.

Tea Biscuit-Honey light night snack

mygreekdish

mygreekdish

3 tbs of black honey

1 pack of any kind of tea biscuit, broken into chunks

5-6 grinded almonds

2 cups of yogurt

This time you’ll just mix everything together and put in the fridge for 15 minutes and you’ll have your mid-night snack ready, you can also switch the biscuit with some fresh red grapes, the sourness of this treat is insane.

Grilled chicken sour dressing

eatthis

1/2 tbs of powdered garlic

3 drops of lemon juice

1 tbs of salt

1/4 tbs of black pepper

1 tbs of vinegar

1/4 tbs of chilli powder

1 cup of yogurt

Mix everything together after grilling your chicken, add the dressing on top and you’ll get an amazing chilly sour grilled chicken that will leave you asking for more.

Grilled Kofta green sauce

kitcheninthesand

kitcheninthesand

1/2 tbs of powdered garlic

3 drops of lemon juice

1 tbs of salt

1/4 tbs of black pepper

1 tbs of vinegar

Fine diced cucumber

Diced arugula leaves

3/4 cup of yogurt

Make sure everything is diced into tiny pieces so you wont get chunks in the middle of your sauce. If you need to spice it up a little, you can add a splint of curry and it will make an amazing effect.

Yogu-slaw

twohealthykitchens

twohealthykitchens

2 tbs of sugar

1 tbs of vinegar

1 tbs of mustard

1 tbs of paprika

1 bag of coleslaw mix (minced cabbage and carrots)

2 cups of fat-free yogurt

Whisk together the yogurt, vinegar, mustard, sugar, paprika, salt, and pepper. Toss them with the coleslaw mix and season to your taste with salt and pepper. This slaw is so versatile; you can have it alone, add it on top of a sandwich or grilled food. For apple lovers, you can also dice some apples with the coleslaw mixture.

Yogu-popsticles, my absolute fav!

nourishyourself

nourishyourself

2 cups of plain yogurt

1 bottle of sugar-free fruit juice

A pinch of vanilla extract

1/2 tbs of honey

Mix everything in a blender so everything well mixed. Add in plastic cups and insert a stick on top, make sure to add some fresh fruit along in the cup, freeze for 3 hours, and you’ll have this frozen goodness ready for you.

Yogurt smoothies

rd

No recipe needed for that one, it’s real easy! Add any kind of fruit you like, with 1 spoon of honey, yogurt and ice then blend it to perfection. My picks are peach-mango, cinnamon-banana and mixed berries yogu-smoothies.

WE SAID THIS: If you hear screaming voices from your tummy and you’re craving something new and healthy, try these recipes.

Yes, there has been a meat scandal going on in Egypt for years. Yes, we are most probably being fooled into consuming donkey meat on a daily basis, but c’mon Egypt, are we all brainwashed into forgetting the vile things we’ve been consciously choosing to eat for decades?

Here are 10 foods that are so freakin’ disgusting, so incredibly gross and so damn ugly, but we love them nonetheless.

Omar Shabrawy’s Culinary Adventures Are the Definition of Egyptian #FoodPorn

Bloggers, especially food ones, have been flooding our social media feeds for some time now. I’m not complaining, they all post really beautiful pictures that sometimes make me want to forget about my diet and just let myself go. But I think that’s the problem, I’ve been so used to seeing beautiful pictures of food from them that it has become the norm. Which brings me to my next topic: Omar Shabrawy.

You seriously blow my mind every time you post a picture. I genuinely feel like I’m going on a different culinary adventure every time you Instagram a picture of a dish, and my stomach can’t handle it anymore. From delicious morning breakfasts to dashing midnight desserts. Shabrawy seriously knows it all.

That time he had sushi and it made me want to quit whatever I’m doing and get my chopsticks game on with him

Or when he had this big, fat, juicy burger and I just died

When he had this Instagrammable breakfast with no coffee, but I still felt refreshed just looking at it

SEAFOOD! ALL THE SEAFOOD!

Look at that pigeon though! It looks like something Gordon Ramsay would approve of

Sorry, but orange is not the new black because chocolate eclairs are

Batata with Nutella is an actual thing! Someone hold me

I can seriously hear my stomach making noises as I type this while looking at this caramelized banana bread!!!

And when he tried this 7alawa dip with dates. UGH!!!

WE SAID THIS: Can you come to our office and cook for us, Omar?

Dubai Now Has Its Own Breaking Bad-Themed Coffee Shop

Oh yeah, that’s right! It’s time to put on your goggles because you’re about to break into that meth lab-themed coffee shop in Dubai Mall this November.

Walter’s Coffee Roastery is a “Breaking Bad” inspired coffee shop founded by Deniz Kosan. Walters Coffee first opened in Istanbul in March 2015 before opening the second location in Bushwick, and is a major attraction for Breaking Bad fans.

The interior of the roastery gives off an industrial vibe of a laboratory, with a yellow, gray, and white color scheme reminiscent of the series. Coffee is served in beakers, the menu is arranged like a periodic table – in which it compliments the theme – and the spacious coffee shop is as well-stocked as Walt’s laundromat lab with glass beakers and flasks decorating the shelves behind the counter.

If you’re Arab then you probably should know what a Maqluba is. If you happen to be a foreigner or one of the unlucky Arabs that don’t have a clue what a maklouba is, let us educate you. It is a traditional dish from the Levant, and it’s very popular in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Syria. So basically everywhere!

The dish includes meat, rice, and fried vegetables placed in a pot, which is then flipped upside down when served, hence the name maklouba, which translates literally as “upside-down.” To show how much we love this dish, we’ve decided to compile a list of our favorite recipes that’ll get your bellies go all aggressive.

Food carts and bikes are pretty much the new cupcake shops in Egypt, they’re everywhere. From batata (sweet potato) to Nutella carts, we’ve just seen it all and are actually really tired of them. Actually wait, we’ll take that back. We’re tired of every single one of them except one: the Sushi Bike!

Yup, there’s an actual bike at Ahmed Oraby Square in New Cairo where you can go and order fresh rolls of heaven. Sushi Bike came to exist a week ago and it operates from 1 pm till 4 pm every single day.

We love sushi as much as the next person, but our only problem with it is that it can sometimes get a little bit expensive. With Sushi Bike, you don’t have to worry about that as their menu is very affordable.

WE SAID THIS: Can it be the weekend already so we can drive all the way to New Cairo and devour dem rolls?

Food Review: Dousha’s Cupcakery Candy Table Is Almost Too Pretty to Eat

$

So, I went to this wedding and bumped into a candy table and started munching away my guilt for an hour straight. I ended up ranting the next day on social media about the foodgasm I had in Mena House Hotel on a Saturday night. Next thing we know, a Halloween-themed candy table, the exact same one that I gushed over for hours, walked right through our office’s door to save my soul from the agony of cookie withdrawal.

The witch craft cookies

Via Dina Hashish

There is an international code (or more of an agreement) for what cookies’ texture should be like. It is supposed to be crispy and crunchy with little chocolate chips that send you straight to paradise. Now this cookie over here managed to defy logic, physics and an international coding system. You look at it and it fools you into thinking it is just another boring, yet addictive cookie and oh boy, you are in for a treat.

It’s hard on the outside and so freakin’ soft and juicy from the inside that I actually started a rumor that it is injected with some sort of happiness hormone. Serotonin maybe? Or is that Nutella? Ugh! We’ll never know.

The softer-than-cotton-candy cupcake

I’m speechless. I just can’t find words to type. Hands down, the perfect cake and the thing that sets it apart is that you can eat six and don’t even feel a thing. Yes, it is that light.

The bite-sized Bounties and what we would like to call happy soul pops

Guys, These coconut balls are to-die-for. They are literally mini-Bounties and they’re so light, you can eat a dozen without even feeling one ounce of cellulite guilt. Honestly the cake pops are geometrical perfection. How many times have you picked up a cake pop at a wedding, only to end up with half of it on your dress?

Dousha’s pop, which we call happy soul pops because your body literally pops with euphoria, are perfectly-sized adorable mummies that taste like everything you’ve ever dreamed of.

How cute are those skull and ghost shaped marzipans. So adorable, so tasty, so unlike marzipan, I’m so eating this baby again.

The yalahwi macaron

Via Dina Hashish

I’m sorry but these are not your regular macarons. Every time I go to a birthday, wedding or any event that serves macarons, I start ranting to myself about what an incredibly pretentious desert they are, and wonder how they managed to become an Egyptian trend when they taste like dirt. Well, that was until I tasted this little yalahwi baby.

I don’t know what the recipe is, but it is definitely a macaron with a twist. The texture is out of this world, more like a cake/tart/heaven/Eden. It is simply mesmerizing.

Thank you Dousha’s Cupcakery for the all the ooohs and aaahs we were saying that morning. Too bad for all of you kids out there, we didn’t leave anything for trick or treats

Cairo Neighborhood Guide: Zamalek

Welcome to the first installment of my Cairo Neighborhood Guides Series! Today we’ll (virtually) travel to the ‘hood of Zamalek, where we’ll check out all the cool places to eat, drink and relax. I’ve interviewed several locals to get their input on what they think is the best Zamalek has to offer.

O’s Pasta

#Farfalle #Basil #Tomato #Oliveoil #Garlic #Pasta #passionforpasta #barilla #delicious #ospasta

A photo posted by Ospasta (@ospasta) on

Mentioned by every single person I interviewed, O’s Pasta was high on everyone’s list. Omar El-Deeb said “O’s Pasta is the best pasta I’ve had in Egypt,” going on to say that it is a cozy spot with few tables and mentioned that the owner is always there, making sure that his original recipes are received well by his guests.

Maison Thomas

Another restaurant mentioned nearly across the board, this Zamalek favorite has been around since 1922! Biko Ibrahim said, “Thomas Maison is the best place for pizza!” while Omar backed up his assertion calling it a classic with its own style of pizza.

L’Aubergine

“Best place to have a drink at is definitely L’Aubergine,” says Biko, while Myrna Ghanem lists it as one of the best spots to go for gourmet food. It was also the first Zamalek restaurant to offer a vegetarian menu.

Cairo Opera House

#Cairo #opera #house #cairooperahouse #egypt #like4like

A photo posted by Usama (@usamamabrouck) on

I’m just going to let this quote speak for itself regarding the Opera House: “The name is probably misleading, by Western ‘standards’ of what an Opera House is or isn’t, but there’s something for everyone, and I appreciate that an awful lot,” says Hilary Baboukis, “you will hear all sorts of lovely things there, from Aida and the pro orchestra and ballet company, down through the ranks to recitals by professionals, recitals by less-[than]-professionals, pop shows and so on. It has a good ‘split’ between Western and Arabic music, and it also features the ballet and the opera companies regularly, and the orchestra pretty much every Saturday night, and and and… Lots happens there.”

Get outside!

A good friend and long-time Zamalek resident, Noor, is particularly fond of the many nature-y things that Zamalek has to offer. From the century-old willow tree near Dino’s Café to the Zamalek Grotto and Obour Garden, there are plenty of places to relax and take in the scenery. The grotto, also known as the Fish Grotto or Fish Garden, is a man-made cave that used to be an aquarium but is now home to thousands of fruit bats. Right across the street you can find benches in Obour Garden upon which to relax and “see all kinds of birds and nice trees.” They have a 5LE entry fee, but the cafeteria that serves hot and cold drinks has no minimum.

Dubai to Fine Schools for Serving Junk Food

Wait, what? In an attempt to curb childhood obesity and other health problems, Dubai’s Food Safety Department has decided to fine schools for offering junk food.

Turns out they first asked schools to cut what they considered “junk food” five years ago. And then they found that some still offered fries, chocolate, croissants, burgers and sugary drinks. *GASP*

So now they’re threatening fines for schools that are not offering low-calorie, low-salt alternatives.

Sorry children of Dubai. No more delicious fries. No more sweet, sweet chocolate. Also, croissants? Who knew those were junk food? I thought they were just bread. Oh well. Enjoy your carrots or whatever.

WE SAID THIS: This is probably one of the few moments we thank God we are adults so we can eat junk food whenever we want!

We Need to All Stop Lying and Finally Admit That Koshari Is Amazing

Okay so, most days I can handle the hate koshari gets, but to be honest, I don’t want to anymore. I’m just tired that this amazing Egyptian creation that dates back to the 19th century always has to hear people say “eww,” or “yaa3” (translates to disgust in Arabic) at it. Every single one of you needs to sit down and appreciate koshari and here’s why:

It’s cheap AF

With everything in our country getting more and more expensive with every passing day, koshari is the only thing that’ll stay cheap (well, relatively cheap).

This dish is basically carbs, on carbs, on carbs, on more carbs, meaning koshari is the least judgmental thing to ever exist and will accept you however you look (or weigh)

Food Review: B2alet Elsa3ada’s Sogo2, Kebda and Hawawshi Are Life

Sogo2 (sausages), kebda (liver) and hawawshi are three magic words you can say to win my affection at any given moment. I could be having the biggest fight with my boyfriend, and as soon as he utters the word “kebda,” I’d instantly forgive him and behave way through the sandwich.

There’s a big problem though, it’s kind of difficult to find a good, delicious oriental sandwich in Cairo lately, one that’ll take all your problems away, box them up and throw them from the 11th floor. That was until I found B2alet Elsa3ada (literally translates to Happy Market). I was cruising around the Fifth Settlement and stumbled upon Adam Mall, which is where I found my new favorite eatery.

Via B2alet Elsa3ada

Upon seeing my favorite three magic words on the menu, I took a seat and ordered all three. It took them exactly six minutes and 32 seconds to have my holy trinity of sandwiches to appear on my table. To say it was a gastronomical experience would be an understatement. The sogo2 and kebda were absolutely glorious and had the right amount of tehina, but the star of the menu was the hawawshi. The baked flat bread encased a spicy yet mouth-watering mix of seasoned meat and neatly diced tomatoes, onion and peppers. The coriander added an extra kick, while the bread tended to even out the robust flavors. It was greasy, filling and oh-so freakin’ tasty.

I, of course, didn’t call it quits and decided to also get dessert. How can you blame me? It was called qonbela, meaning the bomb, which it indeed was. It was a mix of konafa, basbousa, rice pudding, eshta and mango juice. Yes, it sounds like a war zone, which it was, but the best kind. I felt like I was six-months pregnant after this whole B2alet Elsa3adaand it was worth every calorie.

WE SAID THIS: Oh, and a little bird just told us that B2alet Elsa3ada can deliver breakfast right to your doorstep at home or your workplace.

Cairo Neighborhood Guide: Maadi

Welcome, friends, to part two of the Cairo Neighborhood Guide Series! This week, we’ll be checking out Maadi, the “bubble” that keeps locals returning to the same great spots weekend after weekend. It can be a bit overwhelming to an outsider, but that’s what we’re here for today. So let’s get started and dive right in to the most happening spots worth checking out in Maadi.

ACE Club

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-10-55-54-am

A fitting place to start for an expat such as myself, although I have yet to visit. Mentioned as a favorite spot by a couple of the Maadi locals I interviewed, the ACE – Association for Cairo Expatriates – Club is right “in the heart of Maadi, Victoria Square to be specific,” says Kurt Galalah, “where Egyptians clash with foreigners in the best way possible.”

The Tap

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-10-59-19-am

The Tap was actually one of the first spots I went to in Cairo. I think it was my second day here. Anywho, The Tap is is located next to the Olympic stadium. According to Eric Boussot, “it is a very modern yet English style pub (like the ones that are privately owned in the UK) that has live music from different genres and imported booze as well as… the best buffalo wings you can ever taste.”

Abou El Sid

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-01-48-am

“Abou El Sid is a great place because it has delicious Egyptian food, shisha, and it serves alcohol… 3-in-1! I love the chilled out vibe; the outdoor area is super cute,” says Aileen Henry.

Khayrat el Sham

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-02-58-am

Eric calls this spot on road 233 “one of my favorite places… in the whole of Maadi.” Elaborating, “from the beef mixed with fries, garlic dip and greens to a plate called ‘Fattah Mix’ which is a variety of sliced beef and sliced chicken shawarma mixed in fried bread called ‘saj,’ [served with] basmati rice and garlic dip on top.” Sounds pretty delicious to me!

Villa Belle Epoque

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-07-28-am

Their Instagram account claims they’re “A boutique hotel & restaurant bringing the comfort and elegance of a bygone era to modern-day Maadi.” Kurt says that Villa Belle Epoque is “one of [his] favorite hidden gems in Cairo. You instantly feel like you’re not in Egypt as soon as you step inside this boutique hotel. Corkage is also free so you can always get your own booze for a lovely Friday afternoon there.”

Caracas

Delicious Lebanese food, loads of shisha flavors and a great place to “chill with friends,” according to Eric. “If you’re a fan of shisha, I recommend the place right in front of Greco called Caracas which [is] a Lebanese themed cafe that has very good shisha and good hot beverages.”

Road 9

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-17-18-am

There’s a whole lot going on around Road 9. Aileen says, “Road 9 is a good place to walk down, with lots of shops and restaurants to choose from. Sometimes it’s just nice to window shop and stretch your legs!” One of Kurt’s favorite spots in Maadi, Italian restaurant Mermaid, can be found here. There’s plenty to explore, make sure to give yourself a whole afternoon to stroll around and window-shop.

Shopping (according to Aileen)

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-20-45-am

“Nefertari is a great little shop, especially if you’re into natural products. They sell They do gift boxes too, which include some soaps and other Egyptian cotton towels…a great last-minute present idea!”

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-11-28-10-am

“Tee-pee is another great little shop in Maadi, also a good place for gifts. They sell lovely house decor items, as well as other knick-knacks. I can’t go in there without buying at least one thing!”

via Facebook

via Facebook

“Carlitos is a great jewelry shop, and sells affordable but quality pieces. They can also make whatever you want, such as your name in Arabic on a necklace. I love spending ages looking through each glass cabinet of jewelry!”

Honorable Mentions

Aileen – “A felluca on the Nile is one of my favorite things to do, as it is so relaxing. I love going at sunset and cruising along with a beer. We bring speakers to listen to music too.”

Eric – “Ovio which is on road 15 ( I think ), it is one of the best places that serves breakfast in the morning and if you are lucky to get a seat as it is always crowded during the morning time. The food is great, always fresh. I would recommend the smoked salmon dish as it’s my favorite.”

Kurt – “I’ll have to go with three different restaurants which I love all the same, but for different reasons, partly because one is Korean (Gaya), Chinese (Joy Luck) and Filipino (Pinoy).”

WE SAID THIS: For those of you that missed last week’s guide, click here to check out what Zamalek has to offer.

8 Unspoken Rules of Food Everybody Needs to Follow

There are few things in life I like more than food, and they are my seven cats (I actually do have seven cats), my mom’s cooking and Game of Thrones, but I’m not here to talk about this right now. I want to talk about food, and how goddamn amazing it is.

Food is one of the world’s greatest gifts, and because it is that, we need to love and respect it. How does one do that? I’ve created a list of rules that all humans must follow  in order to lead a food-respecting life.

OH MY COCOA! While every single person was obsessing over the supermoon, chocolate lovers were having shivers down their spines for a completely different reason after McDonald’s announced their latest creation, Sweety.

Sweety is basically another reason why we will never be in shape for bikini season, why we will always look for sizes L and XL instead of XS, and why we will always crop the kersh (belly) out of our Instagram posts. In case you’re still wondering, Sweety is a Nutella Burger, the epitome of food porn, the definition of foodgasm, the reason why we will be praying tonight just to thank our Lord for blessing us with such an unhealthy creation.

Please, let’s all pray this reaches the Middle East as soon as possible, we all need a reason to smile. Can your brain process the idea of McDonald’s tasty buns filled with Nutella? Ento fahmeen ana ba2oul eh (Do you guys even understand how big this is)??? Dear Sweety, I have been looking for something my whole life and now I know it was you all that time.
